Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach: |
The Module will be taught weekly. Lectures will be supplemented by four pre-recorded Guest Seminars, facilitated at Edinburgh Napier by the Module Leader. In these seminars, speakers from the public, private and third sectors in the UK will be asked to discuss the leadership in their organizations (past, present and future), in participation with a student audience. Recordings will be made available on Moodle as part of the teaching resources included with the module. LO 1 will be achieved through case study analysis and review of best practice.LO 2 will utilize current thinking on academic models and theories and apply them to business to map areas of excellence and scope for improvement.LO 3-4 will be explored using a participative and interactive approach to teaching and learning in lectures and seminars. These sessions will make use of lecture input, case studies and small and large group discussions.A Study Guide will also be provided on Moodle.Aspects which are considered important in designing the learning materials include:• Module aims and learning outcomes.• Clear and early communication of assessment strategies.• Teaching and learning approaches which give students opportunities to build confidence and communicate that confidence. • Strategies that encourage the students’ capacity to look at the overall process and not look at the individual components in isolation.• Making provision for peer-group support and interactions, whether a student is studying on or off campus.Learning will be supported by module materials, a recommended text, directed reading of articles, books and on-line publications via Moodle. Students are given weekly directed reading and will be expected to prepare for classes in advance by reading a selection of cases and articles.Embedding of employability/PDP/scholarship skills. The assessment strategy for the module is to develop students’ organisation skills, their critical analysis and reflective skills and other employability skills. Students will continue to ‘learn how to learn’ through direction to other sources of information – they will learn how to seek out information, evaluate the validity, currency, quality and relevance of the information they source from the Internet. The students will be engaging in group discussions/debate and presentations, encouraging the development of critical thinking, verbal presentation of arguments, team working and co-operation and consideration of the views of others. Specialist guest lecturers will be invited to deliver ‘real world’ examples and – through these sessions – students will examine and debate current practice in leadership.
Formative assessment will be via student self-assessment on the Module Moodle page.
In terms of summative assessment, there will be two components. The components will be a Case Study and a Reflective Essay. Early feedback to the students will be provided after the Case Study that will prepare them for the Reflective Essay component. Throughout, students will be encouraged to be innovative and to engage in deep learning around the module topic(s).
