12. Module Content
This module will provide you with the opportunity to learn about health promotion within the general population and within and through the nursing workforce. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and improve their health.
The module will focus on the factors that influence health, including (but not limited to): sexuality and sexual practices; spirituality; psychological factors, loss & bereavement; mental health and wellbeing; environmental factors; cultural factors; food and diet; exercise (effects / lack of); smoking, alcohol and substance use. You will explore the main issues and priorities for public health: e.g., obesity, sexual health, mental health, drug & alcohol use; screening programmes (e.g. breast, cervical and bowel cancer); resource allocation; and workforce health.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: Illustrate major global and national health challenges and priorities
LO2: Demonstrate how lifestyle behaviours impact on the health and wellbeing of the general population and the healthcare workforce.
LO3: Examine the relationship between inequality and health behaviours and outcomes
LO4: Evaluate the opportunities and processes of health promotion (including behaviour change theories) to bring about change
LO5: Critically reflect on health promotion activities in the general population.
LO6: Evaluate the role of the media in the reporting of health issues, including their role in framing health and health promotion.
