Description of module content:

The module will support you in reflecting on your own learning experiences, while introducing you to theoretical approaches to adult learning. You will be encouraged to apply learning in your own practice setting and/or with other candidates on the programme. The module will focus specifically on the creation of learning opportunities, the planning phase prior to arrival of social work students on placement and the evaluation of practice placements in relation to quality control. You will be encouraged to consider the placement agency as a learning organisation, exploring opportunities for inter-professional learning and a strong emphasis on collaborative placements, in line with the philosophy of the Allied Health Professions/Social Work Master's degrees at Edinburgh Napier University. You will consider the role of service users in supporting students' learning. You will learn how pre-placement information about social work students impacts on the delivery of practice learning, for example in the design of induction activities, allocation of work and supervision style. You will be introduced to constructive alignment in creating learning opportunities, which are in line with the Standards in Social Work Education. Issues in relation to power, ethical and anti-discriminatory practice will be at the foundation of all teaching, with a strong focus on the SSSC Codes of Practice. You will consider how to incorporate teaching on legislation, policy and guidance as relevant to your setting into the early stages of placement. You will have opportunities to consider how knowledge and skills can be transferred from work with people receiving services to work with students, the role of modelling good practice and issues relating to power in relationships.
