Description of module content:

This module will provide you with opportunities to examine strategies for assessing social work students against the Standards in Social Work Education. You will learn how to gather and interpret evidence from a range of sources, including people who receive services and carers. You will be required to design and explore different methods of assessment and consider how the SSSC Codes of Practice relate to your work with social work students. The particular challenges of supporting failing students will be considered.You will become familiar with the roles of placement team members in the assessment and support of students throughout the placement. You will be able to develop skills in supervising students, giving particular attention to ethical practice and the impact of power and diversity in the professional relationship between practice educator and student.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Examine the evidence base for supervision in the social services context and appraise approaches to supporting and assessing students’ learning in relation to the Standards in Social Work Education.

LO2: Critically reflect on approaches to supporting students who are failing to meet required standards.

LO3: Evaluate the role of feedback in supporting student development.

LO4: Critically reflect on the ethical issues that may arise in supervision and assessment, including the potential tensions between the needs of people who receive services and the needs of students.

Face To Face Lecture 24 The lectures will be provided on four teaching days, each of 6 hours duration. They will introduce key concepts related to practice learning and provide opportunities for interactive and peer learning.
