Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach: |
During the 85-day practice placement, your Practice Educator will support you in transferring your learning from Trimesters 1 and 2 into the practice setting (LO5). Selection of work for you will take into consideration your specific learning needs and relevance to the 6 Standards in Social Work Education (SiSWE) and 22 Learning Foci contained therein (LO1-6). Blended or split placements may be used to ensure that you are able to evidence the range of learning and practice required. Guided through supervision, you will be able to work directly with service users and their families. Your Practice Educator may ask you to complete specific reflective or reading tasks in order to provide you with opportunities to prepare for initial contact with service users and their carers, assessing needs and risk, and presenting these assessments in written and verbal formats (LO1-3). Based on your assessments, you will make recommendations for intervention and implement these recommendations through your ongoing direct work (LO5). Maintaining a reflective diary, discussion in supervision and specific tasks set by your Practice Educator, such as process recordings, will support you to reflect upon and evaluate your learning (LO2, 3, 4, 6). You will be expected to use the skills you developed in Trimester 1 and 2 in your contact with service users/carers and colleagues (LO6), by forming and maintaining positive working relationships and showing your ability to adhere to Social Work values and the Codes of Practice for Social Services Workers. Throughout Social Work Practice 1 you will be working closely with colleagues in your own placement agencies and other agencies, which may provide services to the individuals you are working with. You will be expected to contribute fully to the work of your placement agency in accordance with your role as a Student Social Worker (LO2-6).Weekly supervision is an important and mandatory aspect of Social Work Practice 1 (LO1-6). Together with your Practice Educator, you will critically reflect on the work you have been allocated or have observed, discuss your planning, assessment and intervention and evaluate the effectiveness of your practice. Your Practice Educator will provide guidance and support in accessing appropriate literature and potentially specialist training. You will be expected to keep a reflective log throughout Social Work Practice 1, which will be shared with your Practice Educator (LO2-6). Although you are deemed to be in full-time placement, this includes ½ a day of self-directed study per week, dedicated to academic study directly related to your work in practice, designed to support the integration of theory and research into practice (LO1 and LO5).In accordance with Academic Regulation F5, you must attend the required number of placement days in order to be eligible to undertake the assessment for this module. Please see the myProgramme student handbook and Module handbook for further guidance.

Formative assessment is an integral part of Social Work Practice 1. You will receive feedback on your work on a weekly basis during supervision. An interim report reviewing the progress of your learning will be the subject of discussion between you and your placement team around the halfway stage in your placement. You can find comprehensive details about formative assessment, along with the required pro-formas, in the Module Handbook.
|
Summative assessment will comprise two components: a practice portfolio and a practice study.A practice portfolio will provide a range of evidence of your learning in relation to the 6 Learning Outcomes for this module. The components will build and expand on the work you submitted at interim stage. Supporting evidence will be required from service users and from your Practice Educator. The portfolio is assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.A practice study, whereby you reflect in depth on a particular piece of your placement work, will form the second assessed component. You will receive a grade for this component. You can find comprehensive details about the summative assessment, along with the required pro-formas, in the Module Handbook.
