Description of module content:

This module introduces you to methods for taking forward quantitative data analysis and enables you to reach a point where they are able to open data and run analysis to robustly answers research questions. The module will start off with a reminder of some of the key concepts that you covered in the previous module entitled 'Introduction to Quantitative Methods' and how you can integrate this learning into the current module.

The aim of the module is to enable you to use data securely and safely, to test hypotheses using appropriate statistical methods and to critically discuss findings. Doing so will require you to be able to set-up data, run visualisations, generate descriptive statistics, and then to use appropriate statistic tests, and critically consider implications of findings for their initial questions.

Examples of techniques used will cover descriptive statistics, straightforward approaches to testing association, and more advanced multivariate techniques. The intention is to build your confidence to enable you to not only understand and use these techniques but also to develop your skills into the future in the diversity of career trajectories that might follow.

Learning Outcomes for module:

1. Critically reflect on issues related to data governance
2. Use hypothesis testing and the concepts of Type 1 and Type 2 errors to critically engage with quantitative research questions
3. Produce visualisations and univariate statistics to explore and describe data and critically review distributions
4.Critically reflect on data quality and use creative approaches to addressing data quality
5. Produce a range of statistical analysis techniques on an open data set on health or social care focused research to test hypotheses and to critically evaluate findings.
