Description of module content:

The module introduces you to the theories and concepts of strategic leadership and management in contemporary healthcare. You will be introduced to the importance of a shared organizational vision and collaborative working to achieve excellence in healthcare. This module will support you in your professional development as an aspiring leader by analysing your self awareness, interpersonal skills and self management. This module will give you the opportunity to critically appraise the role of the leader and working with others within a healthcare context.The broad areas that this module will cover include: Leadership and management theory, self awareness and reflection, emotional intelligence, mentorship and coaching, team dynamics and team working, partnership working and working in collaboration, influencing and negotiating skills.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically reflect on the key theories of leadership in the context of effective delivery of a health care service.

LO2: Critically distinguish the difference between leadership and management skills.

LO3: Appraise own personal leadership style and impact on creating a shared strategic vision through team and personal development.

Face To Face Guided independent study 140 The teaching and learning activities are designed to support and enhance your understanding of the theories of leadership as they are applied in different contexts and to explore the effectiveness of specific leadership qualities and skills in contemporary healthcare. Critical reflection on leadership skills will support you to identify personal areas of strength and to consider areas for leadership development.
Face To Face Lecture 2 Lecturer–led presentation providing an overview of the module content and assessment criteria.
Face To Face Tutorial 42 Students will be encouraged to work in groups, provide peer feedback and present findings to the larger group. Real-world problems will allow an opportunity for critical reflection and provide opportunities for students to develop innovative ways of thinking and creative problem-solving. Students will be introduced to systems-thinking models to facilitate and support application to practice.
Face To Face Guided independent study 16 The introduction of theories & case studies will allow for exploration of leadership theories in contextualised scenarios will facilitate group discussions to facilitate engagement and understanding to promote critical analysis and support independent thinking and professional development.
