Description of module content:

In order for innovative technological solutions in healthcare to be developed, embraced, and integrated into clinical healthcare practices, the practitioner needs to be able to articulate the overall policy contexts driving this agenda, appreciate the potential clinical contexts and applicability of use in their own healthcare practices as well as considering implementation issues such as quality, safety, data management, clinical, and cost effectiveness. This module will equip you with the foundation to enable you to become a thought leader in clinical healthcare technology with a particular focus on transformation of clinical services in your own area of practice.The module will include the following content:1. Policy and professional practice contexts of the healthcare technology agenda in the UK and Ireland;2. Drivers for healthcare transformation across healthcare practices;3. Clinical applications of healthcare technologies in healthcare practice;4. Clinical implementation: consideration of quality, safety, ethics, data management; clinical and cost effectiveness5. An introduction to user experiences and the healthcare pathway6. Identification of opportunities to transform service delivery using process mapping and systems delivery7. Leading, delivering, and measuring change in this landscape.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically reflect upon the drivers for healthcare technology policy implementation and professional practice issues.

LO2: Evaluate how healthcare technologies can be used to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare provision in diagnosis, management, treatment, rehabilitation or prevention contexts.

LO3: Demonstrate a critical awareness of the complex ethical and professional issues relating to data management and potential cyber security issues.

LO4: Identify, conceptualise, and define the context of leadership in clinical implementation and gaining key stakeholder involvement.

LO5: Critically appraise the process of clinical implementation for service transformation and identify issues for evaluation.

Independent Learning Lecture 24 We will use a ‘flipped classroom’ approach whereby each week you will watch a pre-recorded lecture. These will be between 1-2 hours in duration. Each lecture will cover a separate learning outcome and will be accompanied by a set of written notes by the lecturer to orientate you to the lecture content. These notes will highlight some key issues to consider and some further reading for your independent study of the topic.
Independent Learning Tutorial 24 After each session, you will have the opportunity to take part in a weekly, live, online tutorial. These tutorials are intended to help guide you in your independent learning of the subject, to acquire a deeper understanding of the core topics, to open a discussion on the key issues, and to share your learning experiences with your peers as a community of learners. The tutorials will be held at a maximally mutually convenient times for the cohort which may be outside normal working hours.
Independent Learning Guided independent study 352 You are required to engage in independent learning on a weekly basis. You will be directed to some core reading as well as some indicative reading based upon your area of healthcare practice. You will be expected to log onto the module discussion board area to discuss the critical issues with your peers.

Oral Assessment 30 1~2~5 Week 7 HOURS= 15 minute You will submit for upload to the moodle site, a 15 minute, recorded oral presentation. We want you to develop a powerpoint presentation that you could present, in time, to your management and peers to influence their engagement in this agenda. Reflecting upon the National and Local policy and professional practice drivers in your particular area of healthcare, the presentation should comprise no more than 10-12 slides and should identify and critically appraise both the drivers and the barriers that may need to be overcome to enable full engagement in this agenda for your particular area of professional practice. The presentation should be evidence-based, fully referenced, and will be worth 30% of your overall module marks.
Essay 70 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period , WORDS= 5000 word You will be asked to submit a written assignment of 5000 words. You will be asked to identify an area in which you feel that your current service provision could be enhanced by an aspect of technology implementation. You will develop a project implementation plan (sometimes called a strategic plan) to map out the overarching strategic goals; define steps to be taken to implementation; consider risks; schedule milestones and timeframe; consider resource requirements; assign responsibilities and requirements of team members and outline a process for evaluation. We want this assignment to be both realistic and pragmatic a resource for you as a ‘project roadmap’ as you move forward in your healthcare practice as a leader in service transformation through the integration of technology.
