Who is the ‘user’; the roles of patients and health professionals in healthcare technology utilization; working together to improve design, delivery and experience of healthcare technology.2. The importance of considering the user during healthcare technology development and throughout the healthcare pathway 3. Outline potential barriers and facilitators in the access and use of healthcare technology; theoretical frameworks in relation to health technology utilization.4. Identifying and addressing inequalities in healthcare technology utilization.5. Identification of opportunities for improving access and usability of healthcare technology.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Independent Learning Lecture 12 We will use a ‘flipped classroom’ approach whereby each week you will watch a pre-recorded lecture. These will be between 1-2 hours in duration. Each lecture will be accompanied by a set of written notes by the lecturer to orientate you to the lecture content. These notes will highlight some key issues to consider and some further reading for your independent study.
Independent Learning Tutorial 12 You will have the opportunity to take part in live online tutorials. These tutorials are intended to help guide you in your independent learning of the subject, to acquire a deeper understanding of the core topics, to open a discussion on the key issues, and to share your learning experiences with your peers as a community of learners.
Independent Learning Guided independent study 176 You are required to engage in independent learning on a weekly basis. You will be directed to some core reading as well as some indicative reading based upon your area of healthcare practice. You will be expected to log onto the module discussion board area to discuss the critical issues with your peers.

Assessment
Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Essay 100 1~2~3~4 Exam Period , WORDS= 2500-3000 words You will use feedback from your formative assessment to inform the development of the summative assessment. You will submit a written report of 2500-3000 words. Your report will focus on end user considerations to explore the barriers and facilitators that impact utilization of a health technology in your chosen area of clinical practice. You will identify a health technology that is underutilized that you would like to address. This underutilization can be within certain settings, among certain groups or more broadly. You will identify resources (e.g., academic papers, theoretical frameworks, government or health body reports, etc.) to help you prepare your report. Your report will: (1) describe the underutilization of a chosen health technology by end users; (2) outline the potential benefits of improving utilization of the technology for users; (3) critically discuss the potential barriers that prevent the chosen technology from being accessed and/or used by end users; and(4) outline an opportunity to improve utilization of the chosen technology. Your proposed opportunity should: (a) address at least one of the barriers you have identified, (b) carefully consider a co-production approach incorporating end-users and others and (c) evaluate the potential benefits and challenges of implementing such an approach. The report should be evidence-based, fully referenced, and will be worth 100% of your overall module marks.
