Subject area group: Allied Health and Social Care Sciences
Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module to be added

Description of module content:

This module introduces the fundamental principles and applications of epidemiology as the core science of public health. You will develop a critical understanding of measures of health and disease, study designs, and approaches to describing and analysing patterns of health in populations. The module emphasises how epidemiological evidence is generated, interpreted, and applied to public health challenges. Through exploring case examples, you will consider how epidemiology contributes to understanding risk factors, health inequalities, and the evaluation of interventions, providing a foundation for more advanced study and practice in public health.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Define and apply core epidemiological concepts, including measures of disease frequency (incidence, prevalence, mortality) and measures of association and effect.

LO2: Critically distinguish between key epidemiological study designs, evaluating their methodological strengths, limitations, and appropriate applications in public health research.

LO3: Analyse and interpret epidemiological data using appropriate measures and methods, drawing valid inferences about population health patterns, determinants, and interventions.

LO4: Appraise the role of epidemiology in informing public health practice, with particular attention to understanding risk factors, health inequalities, and approaches to prevention.

Student Activity (Notional Equivalent Study Hours (NESH))
Mode of activityLearning & Teaching ActivityNESH (Study Hours)NESH Description
Independent Learning Seminar 20 Tutorials will be led by the lecturer and aim to discuss the units. You are expected to prepare for these sessions and contribute to the discussions during the tutorial.
Online Guided independent study 180 You are expected to have a personal plan that guides your independent study. You will use it to schedule your time to read more on the study units, navigate the VLE site and access library resources. You should allow adequate time to complete assessment tasks and prepare for Tutorials.

Assessment
Type of Assessment Weighting % LOs covered Week due Length in Hours/Words Description
Essay 50 1~2~3~4 Not Yet Determi , WORDS= 1500 words You will undertake a structured critical appraisal of a published epidemiological study (quantitative), assessing study design, measures of effect (e.g. risk ratios, odds ratios), potential biases, and implications for validity and generalisability.
Essay 50 1~2~3~4 Not Yet Determi , WORDS= 1500 words You will conduct a focused literature-based analysis of an epidemiological question. This will involve selecting and justifying appropriate study designs, interpreting presented data (including calculation and interpretation of epidemiological measures), and synthesising findings into a coherent argument about implications for public health practice.
