Description of module content:

This module is designed to prepare you for the complex communication and interpersonal tasks that you will encounter in today?s linguistically and culturally diverse global work environment. You will acquire an understanding of perspectives with regard to intercultural communication and learn how to apply them to work environments. You will develop understandings of internal and external business communications, including intercultural (e.g. multinational work environments), digital (e.g. professional email), and mass communications (e.g. advertising). Assessment includes analytical tasks (e.g. analysing misunderstandings) and practical tasks (e.g. writing corporate social media posts). You will also learn to critically reflect on your learning in workplace settings. You will study the following: Theories of language, culture, semiotics, and communication; Globalisation; English as a lingua franca and its impact on business communication practices of different workplaces; Mass media communication with a focus on international advertising; Analysing language in use, including politeness (written, verbal and digital formats).

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO2: Develop an awareness of intercultural communication issues and strategies specific to your current or intended workplace context.

Face To Face Tutorial 24 You will acquire the following employability skills through this module: independent learning, team work, oral presentation skills, business writing skills and communicating for mass media, and problem solving. To help you prepare for assessments, you will be guided through a selection of case studies. You will also learn brainstorming techniques, how to survey relevant literature, and how to support your arguments with related empirical studies.
Online Guided independent study 164 Teaching materials will be available to you via Moodle. Study groups and peer learning are enabled and encouraged, both in tutorials and for assignments. The module directly supports internationalisation: you will become more aware of language change brought about by globalisation and by contact between diverse people and ideas.
Face To Face Lecture 12 Lectures and tutorials will include the presentation and analysis of case studies, mass media communication, relevant academic and magazine articles, newspapers and movies. The teaching, the teaching materials, and the formative assessment all work together to prepare you for the summative assessments.

Oral Presentation 40 1~2 Week 7 HOURS= 0.2 You will pick a relevant issue/topic of intercultural business communication and analyse it according tocontent covered in the module. An oral presentation will reinforce learning (‘if you want to really learnsomething, you have to teach it’). During the question-and-answer portion after each presentation, youwill have the opportunity to clarify your explanation.
Report 60 1~2~3~4 Week 13 , WORDS= 1500 You will be able to choose which topic you consider in depth in your report. For example, if you arestudying Marketing, you might be interested in digital advertising and might choose to do an analysis ofselected adverts. If you are majoring in Tourism you might analyse the discourse of travel brochures orreview websites. If you are interested in intercultural business encounters more broadly, you mightanalyse, for instance, the language used in business meetings. In this way, you will demonstrate yourlearning by applying it to an area of interest and relevance for your current or future work context.
