Description of module content:

In this module, you will develop an awareness of your own cultural conditioning and socialisation experiences. You will apply this awareness in your understanding of how groups and individuals acquire dominant paradigms and frames of reference. Additionally, you will acquire an in-depth understanding of important concepts needed to identify and analyse cultural patterns and structures. Most importantly, you will learn how to do ethnographic research and understand the debates and issues surrounding ethics of representation. You will also participate in a COIL (Collaborative Online Independent Learning) project with international partners, this will allow you to develop skills around ethical decision-making in different cultural contexts. You will reflect on the emerging nature of culture and ethics in a final reflective essay.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the role of culture in the everyday life of groups and individuals, for instance by maintaining contacts with students with similar interests from a different cultural context.

LO2: Develop a broad knowledge of a range of theoretical concepts relevant to the study of aspects of everyday culture, and the ability to apply a selection of these concepts in a research project.

LO3: Demonstrate ethnographical research skills, encompassing a range of qualitative research approaches and an awareness of the reflexive nature of social research.

LO4: Demonstrate skills required to review and summarise evidence.

LO5: Differentiate between ethics, values and ethical dilemmas in different scenarios.

LO6: Identify and interpret an ethical dilemma within different cultural contexts, and contribute to ethical decision-making in the business environment.

Face To Face Lecture 11 Lectures will take place once a week to introduce you to concepts around culture, ethics, and reflexivity
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 22 Practical classes and workshops will give you the opportunity to discuss topics related to the lectures. During the COIL phase of the module you will be able to ask questions related to the project and to writing your reflective diary, as well as your reflective report.
Independent Learning GROUPIND_STUDY 57 From week 8 you will be working in mixed international groups on your COIL project. You will discuss your case study and create a video addressing an ethical dilemma and comparing different approaches to ethics. You will be asked to find and justify a solution to the ethical dilemma
Online Guided independent study 110 You will revise the concepts covered in class and you will carry out independent readings and research for the group work (assessment 1) and the COIL project. You will keep a reflective diary on your experiences during the module. You will write a reflective essay drawing from your diary.

Oral Presentation 40 1~2~3~4 Week 8 HOURS= 15 to 20 mins For this assessment, you will form groups of three and conduct a small scale ethnographically informed research. You will then give an oral presentation of the results of your study in class.
Essay 50 1~2~3~4 Exam Period , WORDS= 1500 w Based on what you have learnt in Exploring Culture and your experiences while you took part in the group work for assessment 1, and the COIL project, you will write a reflection on culture and ethics using Gibbs' reflective cycle. You will support your arguments by drawing from your reflective diary.
Oral Presentation 10 1~4~5~6 Week 13 HOURS= 10 mins For this assessment you will work together with your COIL group. The COIL group will consist of students from four universities (in Switzerland, South Africa, China and Scotland). In your group you will produce a video addressing an ethical dilemma from an intercultural business ethics perspective and you will compare different approaches to ethics as you attempt to solve the dilemma. You will be provided with a choice of case studies to base your work on. The video will be marked by your local university.
