Description of module content:

You will study a range of theories connected to communication to help give you a grounding and understanding of these for better communication and understanding of how to communicate in the world of management and work. These will consist of a range of language theories such as theories of social construction and linguistic relativity. You will also study language as a semiotic system to give a better understanding of how marketing and advertisements are approached, you will study narrative theories and discourse analysis to see how companies create brand images and messages. You will also study the role of English as a business Lingua Franca and reflect on the implications of its impact on globalisation and its use; both in general and in your own experiences in your study abroad or working life.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate a critical understanding of the implications of social construction and linguistic relativism for international management communication.

LO2: Explore the use of the concepts of discourse analysis as a tool for explaining communication problems.

LO3: Evaluate the significance of the global use of English as a business lingua franca.

LO4: Analyse factors contributing to success or failure in instances of management communication in an international context.

Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 30 The theoretical content will be delivered through a series of 10 lectures. These lectures will be aligned with 10 two hour workshops where students will be expected to explore the ideas through a range of activities including practical assignments, textual analysis and case studies. The textual analysis will include examples of business communication while the case studies will look in greater depth at issues affecting the success of intercultural linguistic communication.
Online Guided independent study 170 You will be expected to prepare the reading and tasks for each week in advance of the workshop. All module materials will be available via Moodle. Embedding of employability/PDP/scholarship skills. This module gives you the opportunity to reflect on your current communication practice and help you become a skilled and effective communicator in international settings.
