During the course you will be introduced to theories of translation as they have evolved historically leading to a contemporary appraisal of fundamental issues in translation studies. You will systematically build up an understanding of the practical challenges faced by a translator in terms of lexical and syntactic choices, literal and more interpretative renderings and will be equipped with the terminology to identify particular processes. Class and online discussions will comment on the use of stylistic devices, comparisons between different versions of texts and interpretations arising from these. There will also be discussions based on research articles on particular translation issues (for instance problematized mediation practices in film translations; expansion of the concept of translation as a bilingual transaction to “translation” of cultures in intralingual contexts to provide an explanation of cultural processes to inform an audience; translations in contexts of conflict).
