Description of module content:

This module will provide you with a thorough understanding of specific theories of culture and communication, cultural systems and dimensions offered by majorintercultural researchers and the critiques they have received in order to contribute to a more widening debate of intercultural theory and research. Taught sessions willaddress the notions of culture and intercultural business communication, and theoretical frameworks about cultural systems, cultural complexity and acculturation. There is also one session devoted to an intercultural workshop that helps you rehearse, through practical activities, the input from the previous taught sessions.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically compare a range of competing conceptualisations of the notion of culture.

LO2: Assess the effectiveness of Intercultural Business Communication through a range of business, intercultural and communication strategies.

LO3: Explain the current debate between cultural essentialism and cultural complexity.

LO4: Apply alternative theoretical approaches to interpret specific cultural behaviours.

LO5: Evaluate alternative theoretical approaches to culture and intercultural business communication in both conceptual and practical terms.

Face To Face Seminar 24 Each seminar begins with a discussion of your directed learning tasks to ensure that you are progressing with an adequate understanding of intercultural communication concepts, critically engaging with the learning material, and applying the concepts to real world situations.
Face To Face Lecture 12 The seminar proceeds with a lecture about a new dimension of intercultural business communication that is blended with interactive learning activities, including small group discussion and debate about theories and case studies, and business simulations.
Online Guided independent study 164 Following an introductory seminar about culture in the first week, you will independently carry out directed learning (i.e. a combination of topic-related readings and an analysis of business case studies) before attending subsequent seminars.
