Description of module content:

Digital Storytelling is the use of digital media platforms and interactivity for narrative purposes, either for fictional or for non-fiction stories. The module covers Digital Storytelling theory and creative practice across multiple formats and platforms including immersive experiences, virtual reality, film, television, games, exhibitions, responsive environments, marketing, theatre, design practice, concept communication, and journalism. Topics covered include; linear and non-linear narrative, character development, plot, emotion, story structure, genre, experience design, sensory immersion, visual literacy, colour theory, multi-platform formats, and interactivity. A range of international, creative examples are used in the module to support the theories covered in lectures. These cover historical, current and possible future creative work.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate a practical understanding of the methods and techniques used in the conception and development of digital storytelling.

LO2: Demonstrate a critical awareness of alternative forms of interaction, their conventions, potential and suitability for use within digital storytelling.

LO3: Critically appraise issues, influences and trends in digital storytelling.

LO4: Design a concept model for an interactive story.

LO5: Produce a significant narrative driven portfolio artefact to a given brief and project schedule.
