Description of module content:

The module encompasses two related themes: At a general level it addresses the issues that have arisen as a result of the pervasive nature of information technology. This part of the module addresses a range of topics including: • The nature of information security• The use of threat, attack and defence modelling in securing systems• Risk management and incident handling• Issues in designing and implementing security policies• Computer law: national and international, covering privacy and data protection, computer misuse, intellectual property rights, legal liability.• Social impacts of computing: globalisation, social and global impacts of technology on society and democracy• Ethical and moral considerations: corporate and individual ethics.• Professionalism and codes of conduct.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Evaluate technical and organisation threats to information systems.

LO2: Critically evaluate the role of security policies for an information system in an operational context.

LO3: Propose appropriate security counter measures for a specified threat.

LO4: Understand the legal and professional obligations on computer professionals.

LO5: Participate in debate on moral and ethical issues relating to information technology.
