Description of module content:

The module will focus on branding, brand management and brand communication. You will be introduced to these brand functions and their role and contribution to building and communicating the brand. You will be introduced to the history and development of brands and how contemporary brands attempt to distinguish themselves within their markets. You will develop your understanding of how brands build relationships with consumers and communicate brand values & attributes via brand aesthetics (e.g.l ogos, advertising & digital communication) and communication campaigns such as advertising & public relations. You will work on communication for brand campaigns including creative brand development.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate knowledge of the development of branding and brand management.

LO2: Evaluate the role and impact of branding and brand communication on the relationship between brand identity & image.

LO3: Analyse the role and impact of branding and brand communication on consumer brand perception in relation to purchasing decisions.

Online GROUPIND_STUDY 40 You will work in small groups towards developing your final assessment project.
Online Guided independent study 130 You will be guided to extend your exploration of brands and branding. You may be set work to read or critique prior to tutorials.
Face To Face Lecture 10 Ten one hour lectures will introduce you to the professional communication disciplines, related practice and theory, supported by audio visual teaching platforms. The lecture notes and additional material (case studies, links & examples) will be made available in the VLE prior to the class.
Face To Face Tutorial 20 Ten two hour tutorials will be task orientated where you, with other students and the tutor, will be discussing and applying ideas, debates and theory to specific issues and branding challenges. In tutorials you will apply ideas and theories to both historical and contemporary examples of branding and discuss these within smaller groups; in addition you will be formulating approaches to the 2 assessments. These will be presented and discussed in class.

Oral Presentation 30 1~2~3~4 Week 8 HOURS= 10 minutes As a small group, you will present your work in progress on your branding project. This will include the research for your situational analysis and your target audience. This research provides the foundation for your work for your final brand strategy.
Oral Presentation 70 1~2~3~4 Exam Period HOURS= 20 - 30 minutes As a group you will present your final branding strategy and proposals for brand identity and communications. This should be aligned to your situational analysis and target audiences, taking on board any feedback from your first presentation. This presentation will be undertaken as a recorded group presentation. The contribution of each member to the group work will be identified in your presentation to evidence your individual contribution to the final group submission. This contribution will then be taken into account by the assessors.
