Description of module content:

Human Rights and their enforcement are taking on an increasingly important role in a world where established norms and the rule of law are threatened from many different quarters, including some which until recently would have been unthinkable. This module will consider a number of international human rights conventions, (including, for example, the ECHR and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child), their enforcement and their importance for protecting individuals from the excessive exercise of power by the state. In doing so, the role of human rights in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals will be emphasised, notably in relation to those goals relating to global inequality, and the need for peace, justice and strong institutions. While the primary method of teaching will be by lecture, there will be a greater emphasis placed on preparation and reading prior to classes, with a view to giving you a foretaste of the style of teaching that is more common in Honours modules.
