Description of module content:

The module shall consist of 10 teaching sessions in total. These shall include the aims and objectives of EU and UK competition law as well as an overview of main substantive provisions of EU and UK competition law on anticompetitive agreements, abuse of a dominant position and mergers. There will also be coverage of the main forms of enforcement, so both public and private enforcement.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate an understanding and be able to critically explain the main aims and objectives of EU and UK competition law in an informed and questioning way, which refers to prevailing theories.

LO2: Demonstrate and develop a systematic working knowledge and understanding of the main provisions and principles of both EU and UK competition law as well as the main mechanisms and modes of competition law enforcement.

LO3: Critically apply the key rules and principles of EU and UK competition law to hypothetical factual situations in an informed, rigorous and concise way.

LO4: Analyse and critically discuss some of the key debates around competition policy and how substantive competition law and/or its application may be reformed in particular to address the challenges presented by new technologies.

Face To Face Seminar 30 The module will be taught by way of 10 3-hour seminars. The first 45 minutes to one hour shall be primarily a lecture-style introduction to the topic. The subsequent 2 hours will be more interactive, with discussion of problem-style questions, leading cases and contemporary issues in competition law.
Online Guided independent study 170 Independent study using textbooks, legislation and other sources, both in preparation for teaching activities and to consolidate and develop knowledge and understanding of legal topics acquired from teaching activities.
