Description of module content:

This module will provide you with a firm and critical understanding of key concepts of comparative public law and of selected issues of contemporary constitutionalism. In addition to an introduction to the comparative methodology and to legal traditions, the topics that you will address in the module include, among others, climate change, populism, hate speech, separatism and national security. The above will all be adapted to reflect changes in a very dynamic and ever-evolving area of law. The delivery of the module will also be enriched by the participation of a number of guest lecturers from different jurisdictions.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of comparative legal methodology.

LO2: Demonstrate the ability to identify and explain the main features of various legal traditions in an informed, rigorous and concise way.

LO3: Critically analyse the key legal issues characterising comparative public law today.

LO4: Analyse and evaluate the comparative constitutional dimensions of political and societal developments that take place in multilevel settings.

LO5: Demonstrate the ability to research and use appropriate legal and academic sources to support arguments and conclusions; and appropriate use of OSCOLA (Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities).

Face To Face Seminar 30 Each seminar shall consist primarily of an introduction to the topic, followed by interactive discussions and workgroup activities on contemporary legal issues that arise in the relevant area, engaging with leading cases and problem-style questions.
Online Guided independent study 170 Independent study using textbook chapters, case law, articles, and other sources, both in preparation for teaching sessions and to consolidate and develop knowledge and understanding of legal topics acquired from teaching activities. To research and prepare for each seminar, you will be provided with seminar questions and a full reading list.
