Description of module content:

Public international law is the body of rules, regulations and standards applicable to sovereign states and other international actors. One of the salient features of public international law is its lack of a centralised enforcement mechanism raising doubts and controversies over its effectiveness and efficiency. The course will provide a broad overview of public international law concepts, mechanisms and frameworks while introducing you to international jurisprudence which has continued to shape the discipline over the years. Emphasis will also be given to the recognition, incorporation and status given to international law norms under the UK/Scottish domestic legal system(s). A wide range of topics will be broached upon during the course including but not limited to: treaty law, state sovereignty, the law of international responsibility, privileges and immunities, use of force, the international protection of human rights, the international protection of the environment and the settlement of international disputes.
