Description of module content:

This module will begin with an introductory/ground rules session in which we clarify the approach to the module and assessment. We will then look at key theoretical ideas, eg heteronormativity and its relationship to law, and use this as a perspective from which to critique the law’s approach to various sexualities and genders (cis and trans). The end of the module will consider issues of ‘conscience’, and may include topics such as religion, gender and sexuality; abortion, etc.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: demonstrate a systematic understanding of key aspects of the field of sex, sexuality, gender and the law.

LO2: demonstrate coherent and detailed knowledge of the field, at least some of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of aspects of law in an inter-disciplinary context.

LO3: critically evaluate arguments, assumptions and abstract concepts and relate them to our everyday lives.

LO4: communicate effectively in writing, employing a degree of originality and creativity

LO5: manage your own learning, including the generation of inner feedback that enhances your autonomy as a learner.

Portfolio 25 4~5 Week 10 , WORDS= 1500 words Written reflection after processing feedback from the seminar and summative feedback on the Analysis (Nicol's generating inner feedback to increase learner agency approach). You will be asked to reflect on questions such as the following: How well did I understand the task? Did I plan in advance and think about what I was doing? Did I seek guidance on something I didn’t understand? How do I view myself as a learner (eg fixed or malleable)? What were the obstacles (if any) I experienced that hindered my best effort? What strategies have I learned from the feedback process (peer- and lecturer) that can help me to improve?You will be asked to detail your action plan for moving from your learning process for the Analysis, to the Final Essay.
Essay 50 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period , WORDS= 2,500 words Essay answering pre-set essay question, drawing on work done for the Analysis and also showing development from this, based on reflection and action plan.
