Description of module content:

This module will build on your knowledge and understanding in relation to person/relationship centred care delivery in Learning Disability nursing. You will engage in scenario based learning to support your development of holistic assessment skills in relation to the health and well-being of people with Learning Disabilities. You will examine the results of patient assessments and following review of the evidence base, including clinical guidelines, you will prioritise and plan delivery of care utilising both pharmacological and non-pharmacological nursing interventions in relation to Learning Disability nursing You will consider the impact of altered health on individuals and explore the importance of communicating effectively with people with Learning Disabilities /families and carers to develop a shared understanding of prescribed treatments.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
A blended approach will be utilised within this module which means that there will be a combination of face to face and online learning This will include interactive online activities, tutorials and lectures. Materials and activities will be provided via a virtual learning environment to supplement and compliment your learning within lectures and tutorials (LO1-5). Lectures and tutorials will be recorded, enabling you to access these via your virtual learning environment to better support your development.

Within scenario-based learning activities you will develop insight into the assessment of individuals and the skills associated with this; using your communication skills you will conduct a patient assessment to inform care planning and nursing intervention (LO1).

You will examine assessment results in order to identify functional changes of altered health, which will enable you to consider the impact these have on the health and well-being of the individual (LO2).

You will explore the evidence base, including clinical guidelines, which inform and direct care delivery (LO3). In addition, the impact of the use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions as part of nursing care will be examined (LO4).

You will exemplify working co-productively with individuals and/or their co-supporters to inform person/family centred care (LO5).




Formative Assessment:
Formative feedback will be given throughout the module in a variety of ways including face-to-face within tutorials, peer to peer within OSCE practice and online within workbooks and a practice pharmacology MCQ exam.

Summative Assessment:
Summative OSCE (80% of total mark)
Summative open book online MCQ exam (20% of total mark)
