Description of module content:

You will explore the complexities of working with people with learning disabilities who have multi-morbidities (more than two illnesses or diseases occurring in the same person at the same time) and the impact this can have on people and those who support them (LO1 – LO5).
You will explore and understand the role of the learning disability nurse in the provision of holistic person centred care with consideration made to changing health profiles across the life span including palliative and end of life care (L01).
You will have the opportunity to discuss effective communication skills in relation to informed decision making and transitions in care and care delivery to support people and their carers who have multi-morbidities (LO 4).
You will develop an understanding of a range of approaches to health care provision including health promotion, health interventions and treatment across a range of services and settings (LO3 and LO5).

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Explore the impact that an alteration in physical, mental, behavioural and cognitive health and well-being can have on people with a learning disability across their lifespan.
LO2: Utilise the research and evidence-base to explore complex health and wellbeing needs.
LO3: Examine the local, national and international guidelines that inform healthcare provision for people with complex health and wellbeing needs.
LO4: Develop knowledge and understanding of compassionate communication techniques that establish effective communication with people who have complex health and wellbeing needs.
LO5: Consider the benefits and scope of working co productively with individuals with an alteration in health status and their families/carers across the lifespan within health and social care settings.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
A blended approach will be utilised within this module, which means that there will be a combination of face to face and online learning opportunities. This will include interactive online activities, tutorials and recorded lectures. Materials and activities will be provided via a virtual learning environment to supplement and complement your learning within lectures and tutorials ( LO1-5). Lectures will be recorded, enabling you to access these via your virtual learning environment to better support your development. Principles of inclusive learning will be utilised within all teaching delivery to support all learners to achieve. Lectures and tutorials will be used to deliver core concepts and ideas relating to the development of understanding of the role of the learning disability nurse (LO1-5).

Scenario-based approaches will enable application of nursing practice within a learning environment to deepen and enrich student understanding of learning disability nursing practice (LO1-5)
