Description of module content:

Review research evidence of the health needs and inequalities of people with learning disabilities. Identify and discuss patterns of health needs: learning disability specific population health problems, barriers to accessing services, health surveillance models, local health improvement initiatives that promote health and well-being, public and individual perceptions of people with learning disabilities and their health and well-being. Health improvement initiatives: Identify health improvement initiatives and programmes of health promotion aimed at improving health and well-being & the involvement of people with learning disabilities to manage their own health and self-care. Supporting and enabling user and carer involvement, health improvement approaches drawn from examples from practice and the literature and the review of interventions and outcomes.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Accurately review and evaluate the evidence relating to the health inequalities and health needs of people with learning disabilities.
LO2: Evaluate health improvement initiatives aimed at improving the health and well-being of children, adults and older people with learning disabilities.
LO3: Accurately assess health education and health promotion initiatives and materials designed to address the health needs of people with learning disabilities across the lifespan.
LO4: Critically reflect on the nature of user and carer involvement and partnership working in practice.
LO5: Examine the relationship between public and individual perceptions of health and well being.
LO6: Critically reflect on the impact and outcomes of interventions aimed at improving health and wellbeing
