Description of module content:

On this module, you will develop an understanding of the foundational practical and technical skills for cinematography and editing. You will acquire the skills needed for current practice of filmmaking. You will learn the basic principles of production and post-production processes. This will include creative practical exercises in filmmaking and editing. You will develop your understanding of a range of approaches and creative concepts relevant to your image-making practice.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Outline the main theories, concepts and principles involved in digital editing workflow and creative camera techniques.

LO2: Develop an awareness of and reproduce routine operations for camera and editing software required for the completion of creative filmic briefs.

LO3: Recognise and duplicate effective digital editing and camera workflow skills to produce a professional filmic outcome.

LO4: Define your creative ideas and respond to feedback.

Online Guided independent study 100 In guided independent study students will practice what they have learnt in class. This may involve booking out camera equipment or practicing editing in the lab. Documents will be provided for editing students to reinforce lab teaching by the lecturer. Students will also write in their blogs about their studies on this module and any other film related matters that interest them.
Online GROUPIND_STUDY 64 You will form study groups to practice your camera and editing skills together.
Face To Face Lecture 8 Lectures provide you with the foundational theories, principles and technical parameters of film editing and camera techniques for production and post-production digital workflows. The information delivered in these lectures will be developed and consolidated in the other learning and teaching activities.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 24 In practical workshops you will implement the theories, knowledge, and techniques taught in the lectures. For camera you will learn how to use the equipment and how all of the pieces work together. On set protocols will be covered and how to work collaboratively. For film editing you will learn how to edit using the software Premiere Pro or equivalent. For both you will also learn good practice, professional behaviours and the importance of health and safety.
Face To Face Tutorial 4 Tutorials will be done individually or small groups. Here students can ask questions about their progress in exercises and assessment preparation.

Learning Log 50 1~4~5 Week 12 HOURS= 2000 words The Critical Blog will demonstrate your understanding of the main theories, concepts and principals involved in creative camera and editing techniques for production and post-production digital workflow. It will document your participation in camera and editing practical sessions. You will write a critical reflections on each assessment brief.
Project - Practical 50 2~3~4~5 Week 12 HOURS= 6 minutes The second assessment is the completion of a series of project briefs covering camera techniques, editing and production and post-production workflow. Due to the ever evolving nature of the topic of this module, projects will be defined in response to the technological considerations that are relevant at the time of delivery. Filmmaking in groups will receive one group mark only, individual editing assessments will receive an individual mark.
