Description of module content:

This module introduces students to the concepts, techniques, and practical applications of contemporary studio-based photography in advertising. Through a series of creative advertising briefs, students will develop essential studio-based photography skills, including lighting application, composite imaging, and post-production techniques.Alongside practical work, lectures will provide theoretical and contextual insights into the role of studio photography within the advertising industry, fostering a critical and informed approach to creative practice. By the end of the module, students will have expanded their knowledge and proficiency in studio-based photography, equipping them with the necessary skills for professional and commercial applications.

Guided by tutors and technicians, these sessions provide opportunities to refine your practice, test new techniques, and respond to visual challenges. You will expand your technical knowledge, enhance problem-solving skills, and strengthen your personal photographic approach.
Online Guided independent study 158 Guided by academic staff, you will take ownership of your learning by developing your photographic practice and research beyond taught sessions, through independent study. this process allows you to refine technical skills, deepen conceptual exploration, and engage critically with relevant contexts.
Face To Face Lecture 12 You will explore the key concepts, historical developments, and critical debates in photography relevant to this module. Delivered by academic tutors, lectures provide foundational knowledge, theoretical frameworks, and contextualisation for photographic practice. By actively engaging with, and reflecting on presented ideas, you will deepen your understanding of photography’s technical, cultural, and conceptual dimensions.
Face To Face Tutorial 18 Through group critique, you will present your photographic work for discussion and feedback from peers and tutors. This process fosters critical reflection, constructive critique, and deeper engagement with your creative practice. Project - Practical 60 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period A body of work developed in response to multiple client-based creative briefs. You will undertake a range of technical and creative projects assigned by the tutor, applying advanced studio photography techniques—such as lighting, composition, and composite imaging—to meet professional advertising standards. Projects may also require the use of post-production processes appropriate to a commercial context.Through these briefs, you will engage with specific audiences and contexts, and develop skills in creative problem-solving, concept presentation, and effective communication. Your submission will include final photographic outputs and supporting documentation, which will incorporate critical reflection on your creative and technical processes. All components will be submitted for final summative assessment.
Portfolio 40 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period You will produce a creative workbook that documents your exploration of research, creative and technical experimentation, critical evaluation, explanation of process, and analysis of outcomes. This workbook can be compiled digitally or physically and may take various forms, depending on your preferred working practice.It should include visual research, documentation of your creative development (such as test shots), and reflective commentary on the progression of your project, including challenges encountered and achievements made.
