On this module you will consolidate your knowledge of the ways in which television is studied within the contexts of academic research. You will learn about the range of different frameworks within which researchers investigate media production including: historical and institutional surveys; the assessment of cultural impact; policy questions; audience effects including gender differences; an examination of issues of representation and the media; economic development; and the on-going impact of innovation and new technologies. You will identify a potential topic suitable for detailed research and present a short seminar paper on this topic. You will be introduced to the academic literature in this field and will write a short literature review. You will learn about the different types of methodologies which are appropriate to researching the media including qualitative and quantitative approaches. A number of case studies of relevant research questions will be studied to reflect a range of approaches including ethnographic studies; gathering data through interview, questionnaires and focus groups; and other methods of evaluating research data. Based upon your literature review you will research a question (as agreed with the Module Leader) and write an essay on this subject.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the range of approaches to television studies and identify and assess the importance of different research methodologies for different areas of study.

LO2: Investigate a potential research topic, survey the existing literature relevant to the topic and give a short presentation outlining why this is a suitable area for further research.

LO3: Contribute to discussions about a range of research questions and demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate themes and topics in television studies.

LO4: Produce an essay that investigates a relevant research question and demonstrates a clear understanding of the subject area and present a well-argued analysis of the topic.
