Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach: |
Weekly three-hour lectures and workshops will generate a greater understanding of the issues involved in researching different genres of TV programmes (LOs 1,2). Visual presentations will lead onto class discussions, small group exercises and individual projects, with added input from appropriate industry guest speakers (LOs 4,5). Tutorials will enable you to understand how to research both for development and production (LOs 1,2,3,4). Tutorials will also encourage you to analyse and critically reflect on the ways the current marketplace is changing (LO5). You will also generate ideas and present work to a professional standard (LOs 1, 2, 3). You will be supported and encouraged to become reflective practitioners with a deep understanding of the requirements of a TV researcher in today’s media landscape.Emphasis will be in production ideas and on developing these into fully researched production documents to be delivered to industry standard.International programming, restrictions and response to different genres, ensures that the module delivers a diverse and international perspective.
You will work collectively during class and engage in group activities that will be assessed formatively across the module. These will sit across the development of the factual programme ideas and include mock pitching sessions to the class as well as one to one and group tutorials at which you will receive feedback. These will feed into summative assessments and are intended to give you the confidence to present and develop your factual programme ideas.
1. Oral Presentation Assessment (30%) will require you to pitch 2 programme proposals in a ten minute slot, thus demonstrating that you have engaged fully in finding ideas for different genre (LO 1,2,3).2. Portfolio Treatment File(40%) The written assessment will ask you to develop one of the ideas into a full treatment. This will comprise an outline of the proposed programme, with all legal documents, health and safety assessment, technical requirements and budgeting (approximately 1 page each). The treatment will also include a two-page programme outline, one to two pages on presenters/interviewees and a two-four page breakdown of how the programme will be realised; including research, shooting style and script outline (LOs 1,2,3,4,5). 3. Reflective Logbook (30%) will record your progress on the module and demonstrate how you have engaged with current working practices in the unfolding media landscape (LOs 3,4,5).
