Description of module content:

This module covers aspects of sustainability in film. As part of the module you analyse how environmental issues are represented on screen. You examine the carbon footprint of film production by considering different issues of sustainability within different stages of production, such as waste, use of sustainable materials and the resources needed to light and warm a set. You explore new guidelines and available tools to improve sustainability in film production, such as carbon calculators, WE ARE ALBERT guidelines, and the Green Guide. Throughout the module you are encouraged to reflect on sustainability within your own practice.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Critically analyse and synthesis ideas, concepts and practical choices relating to sustainable film production.

LO2: Critically reflect on different representations of the environment and environmental crisis in screen media.

LO3: Evaluate the scholarly literature on film and sustainability in relation to ongoing film industry practices.

LO4: Apply knowledge of sustainable approaches to film production in your current film projects.

Essay 60 1~2~3~4 Week 13 , WORDS= 2500 The essay identifies at least four key differences on how the course literature perceives sustainability and film and current industry practices as exemplified by for example BFI, Netflix, and ALBERT. The essay should refer to course literature and at least include and discuss the following concepts: Anthropocene, Finite Media, Fossil Fuels, Carbon Footprint, Carbon Offsetting, and Throw-away culture.
Portfolio 40 1~2~3~4 Week 8 The portfolio should include:- The slides to the group presentation- A green memo for a student film you are familiar with, for example that you worked on in the past, or that you are currently involved in. The green memo should be at least one page and max 2 pages and should be written from the production's perspective.
