Description of module content:

This module will introduce you to fundamental editorial skills, methodology & visual understanding. You will work in response to a series of technical and creative professional briefs comprising requirements relevant to editorial industry settings. By learning the building blocks of storytelling through a series of exercises, you will produce a body of creative work that will focus on considered engagement with external audiences.

Face To Face Lecture 10 Informative sessions for the input of specific subjects into the curriculum, supported by learning technologies (Moodle). During lectures students engage with examples of photojournalism and editorial and documentary photography from historical beginnings to contemporary examples including technical, ethical, visual, metaphorical and contextual issues. They evaluate the content of the delivered information in relation to assignments and are encouraged to share ideas and responses.
Face To Face Tutorial 24 Academic staff work with students in class giving regular formative feedback on exercise planning, outcomes, re-shoots and work-in-progress through a series of one-to-one, group and individual tutorials.
Online Guided independent study 158 Students are guided by academic tutors to undertake the creative and technical exercises and photo story assigned to them in unsupervised time, giving them autonomy over their story telling subject, location, location approach and time management. The Online Learning Environment (Moodle) supports the independent study with multiple guides and instructions aimed at furthering technical and creative abilities.
Independent Learning Practical classes and workshops 8 Practical workshops developing and practising skills in editing, image sequencing, selection and narrative development. Gallery visits to relevant exhibitions.

Project - Practical 60 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period HOURS= 10-40 images A portfolio of visual work comprising exercises and a final photo story all with associated written captions, quotes and statements. Students work individually on a number of technical and creative briefs and exercises reflective of live editorial assignments. The final number of images required for each exercise will be determined by the particular news story or brief the students are asked to respond to. The photo story images should be submitted with a written statement and captions, the exact numner of images and length of written elements will be determined by the student's project. Working autonomously and in regular feedback sessions they work to build understanding and competency in the fundamental components of editorial photography. Students apply the knowledge learned in the exercises to a final creative editorial photo story. The portfolio might comprise but is not limited to images, written work and multimedia components. All works are submitted for final summative assessment.MLs will discuss with students the appropriate number of images required for submission, depending on the creative ambitions of their chosen project.
Portfolio 40 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period , WORDS= Portfolio A portfolio comprising a creative workbook and other associated materials. The workbook should detail the students’ exploration of research, their creative and technical experimentation, critical evaluation, explanation of process and analyse of outcome. This workbook can be compiled digitally or physically and can take various forms depending on the students’ preferred working practise. Other materials associated with the module may also be included at this assessment point and added to the portfolio. These might include but are not limited to exercises, workshop outcomes, visual and written tasks. All works are submitted for final summative assessment. Your tutor will discuss with you the appropriate number of images required for your submission, depending on the creative ambitions of your chosen project.
