Description of module content:

This module will develop your long-term contextual documentary understanding, exploration and narrative image creation. You will utilise and experiment with a range of photographic approaches and outputs across the breadth of the genre to explore and present a comprehensive body of documentary work, tackling themes ranging from the deeply personal to the global. You will continue to work on building narrative, exploring various presentation approaches and experimenting with dissemination in order to produce a body of work which speaks effectively to an identified audience.You will fully explore the wide scope of the genre in this module including but not limited to; long term documentary, comprehensive story telling, photographic narrative etc with potential to exploring “Post Documentary” “Conceptual Documentary” and Photo Book production.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Produce a range of sophisticated techniques and processes associated with the production of documentary imagery to a professional standard

LO2: Apply creative problem solving through emerging independent practice, drawing on research and analysis, experimentation, application of risk taking, and generation of new ideas and/or solutions through creative practice.

LO3: Consider ethical, legal and professional discourses in the medium and apply these with consideration.

Face To Face Tutorial 20 Academic staff work with you in class giving regular formative feedback on project planning, development, re-shoots and work-in-progress through a series of one-to-one, group and individual tutorials.
Online Guided independent study 164 You are guided by academic tutors to undertake creative work on long term documentary projects of your own choosing. With guidance and support from technical and academic staff you will make work in unsupervised time, giving you autonomy over your approach, location and technical application.
Face To Face Practical classes and workshops 8 Practical workshops advancing and practising skills in project development, editing, image sequencing, selection, dissemination, presentation and narrative development. Gallery visits to relevant exhibitions.
Face To Face Lecture 8 Informative sessions for the input of specific subjects into the curriculum, supported by learning technologies (Moodle). During lectures you will engage with various examples of long form documentary projects from the historical and traditional to contemporary and conceptual examples including technical, ethical, visual, metaphorical and contextual issues. You will evaluate the content of the delivered information in relation to assignments and are encouraged to share ideas and responses.

Project - Practical 60 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period HOURS= 1-100 images You will produce a body of work comprising a final creative documentary project and accompanying written elements. This will typically include between 15 and 40 images, although the exact number may vary depending on your creative response. Your submission must also include a written statement and image captions, the length and format of which will be determined by the nature of your project.You will work independently over the semester to develop and refine your chosen documentary project, creating a final outcome that is appropriate for a clearly identified audience.Your project may incorporate elements of traditional or contemporary storytelling—such as archival material, text, interviews, or other forms of narrative—depending on your subject and your chosen method of dissemination. Final outputs may take various forms, including a photobook, newspaper, magazine series, portfolio box, or webpage.You will discuss the appropriate number of images and overall scope of your submission with your tutor, in line with the creative ambitions of your project.
Portfolio 40 1~2~3~4~5 Exam Period , WORDS= Portfolio You will submit a portfolio comprising a creative workbook and other associated materials. Your workbook should document your exploration of research, creative and technical experimentation, critical evaluation, explanation of process, and analysis of outcomes. It must also justify your chosen dissemination approach and reflect on your intended audience.The workbook may be compiled digitally or physically and can take various forms depending on your preferred working practice. It may include, but is not limited to, visual and written tasks, workshop outcomes, test images, and reflective exercises.You will agree the appropriate number of photographs for your submission through discussion with your tutor, and this decision must be clearly recorded in your workbook. Your tutor will also advise on the expected length and scope of your workbook and written materials, in line with the creative ambition of your project.All components are to be submitted for final summative assessment.
