Description of module content:

This module will help you secure a work placement or contribute to a media project within the creative media industries. Through this placement you will gain new, knowledge of television/media broadcasting today. This will give you a greater breadth of understanding of the dynamic and changing workflows and practices within the contemporary media industry. With support from the module team you will secure and organise a suitable work placement (approx. 40 hours) which will be directly relevant to the BA (Hons) Television programme. In the course of the module you will research opportunities within broadcasting which will contribute towards a Case study of a production company or media organisation. You will develop your CV and writing skills, your presentation skills; and your ability to communicate and liaise with industry professionals. You will maintain a reflective logbook of your experience on the work placement with particular reference to the enhancement of your technical skills and knowledge and understanding of content creation. You will also produce a detailed report which will analyse and critically evaluate your understanding of contemporary production practice in the broadcasting industries. You will evaluate your placement experience and assess the transferable skills which have been applied during the placement. Experience of the workplace will enhance your employability on graduation and will inform your learning across the programme.

Through a short series of lecture and seminars you will develop your CV writing and presentation skills. You will also research the background of a case study media organisation and potential work placement businesses and will be given guidance on finding an appropriate placement. You will be given an induction into employment procedures and protocols. You will liaise with the module leader to identify clear learning outcomes from the time spent in a professional environment.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: Demonstrate your ability to negotiate, design and manage a work placement within a business relevant to television broadcasting and the creative media industries.
LO2: Develop a focused attitude and problem-solving approach to work-related tasks displaying autonomy and professionalism in your work placement organisation.
LO3: Conduct research into a media organisation relevant to your work placement or career aspirations. Critically reflect on issues relating to current professional practice and media production.
LO4: Produce a Report that assesses and critically evaluates the transferable skills you have acquired and demonstrates a clear understanding of how this connects with and can contribute to your future employability.
