Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Learning & teaching methods including their alignment to LOs;
Classes are in tutorial form and are highly interactive. Emphasis is placed on practising speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, using the resources of the language laboratories and the languages server. Extensive use of Moodle in conjunction with these resources facilitates practice, revision and independent learning. Practice is given in role play.
Embedding of employability/PDP/scholarship skills;
Communication skills are enhanced by learning a second language. Role plays give practice in real life situations. Both speaking and writing are assessed.
Assessment (formative and summative);
All classes build on and develop the work of the previous week. Informal formative assessment is given via practice role plays, listening exercises and writing practice. Component one of the assessment assesses speaking and listening; component two assesses reading and writing in Spanish.
Research/ teaching linkages;
The module content and delivery is based on current research and best practice in language teaching and applied linguistics.
Supporting equality and diversity;
Teaching materials are available on Moodle and on the languages server as well as in hard copy. Assessments are designed to be fair to students from a range of backgrounds and different first languages.
Internationalisation;
Learning a foreign language gives an entry to another culture and world view and fosters integration and tolerance. Students from varying backgrounds are encouraged to work and learn together.

Description of module content:

Basic grammar, including the past and future tenses, irregular and reflexive verbs, adjective agreement, comparative and superlative adjectives, ordinal numbers, conjunctions and word order; vocabulary relating to everyday topics; expressing opinions, agreement and disagreement; practice in role play and writing skills. Cultural background on Spain including home, family and daily life, e.g. using public transport or arranging accommodation.
