Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
Learning & teaching methods including their alignment to LOs;

All four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are practised in the context of interpreting, writing a business report and negotiation. The lecturer acts as a facilitator and mentor by guiding the students though the module, facilitating the acquisition of the required lexis, structures and skills and giving feedback during negotiation practices. Students are responsible for developing their own negotiation scenario on the basis of examples provided.

Embedding of employability/PDP/scholarship skills;

The module teaches communication skills, specifically negotiation skills, independent working and the ability to synthesise information and present a cogent argument.

Assessment (formative and summative);

Cumulative formative assessment is given in the tasks which go to make up the portfolio. Summative assessment - the mock negotiation - takes place in weeks 12/13

Research/ teaching linkages;

The module content and delivery is based on current research and best practice in language teaching and applied linguistics.


Supporting equality and diversity;

The assessments are designed to be accessible to students from a variety of different backgrounds and first languages. Material can be provided via Moodle or in hard copy. Students Support Services can provide extra help as required.

Internationalisation

The module teaches intercultural negotiation skills.

Description of module content:

Revision of work on complex grammar structures. Lexis, structures and culture-specific strategies for negotiation. Practice of interpreting, writing and negotiation skills in a business context. Research into a negotiation topic and preparation for negotiation.

LO1: synthesise information from a variety of authentic German business and professional sources
LO2: present complex ideas and arguments and discuss them fluently in German.
LO3: apply German language skills in a mock business or professional negotiation
