Description of module content:

This module focuses on the design trade off's for the design of energy systems. This will include details of Electrical generator design operation and specification (Including synchronous machines). It will also include Thermodynamics, in particular the design of Heat pump, and Heat transfer as well as heat exchangers. Fluid flow, Fan selection and operation plus Pumps and piping networks will also be covered. The module will also introduce the principles of energy systems design for sustainability, Building thermal load analysis, Thermal storage & Compressor control.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Specify key design parameters for impulse type hydro turbines.

LO2: Define appropriate energy system system boundaries.

LO3: Select appropriate pumps and fans for specific applications.

LO4: Analyse simple heat transfer systems.

LO5: Design simple energy system (specify main components for a heat pump system).

Face To Face Lecture 22 Delivered overseas at GXUST, this module runs intensively, with 2-hour lecture sessions per topic, during which students focus exclusively on it. Lectures introduce core theory through explanations, worked examples, case studies, and visual materials. Each lecture concludes with guidance on subsequent tutorials and directed independent study.
Face To Face Tutorial 22 Consists of a mixture of tutorials and laboratory experiments. The labs will demonstrate the practical application of some of the issues covered during the lectures. The tutorials will provide a hands-on learning experience under the guidance of a tutor. Students will work individually or in small groups to solve problems. Tutorials emphasise active learning and provide an opportunity to receive personalised feedback on exam-type questions. Delivered overseas in GXUST
Face To Face Centrally Time Tabled Examination 2.75 The exam evaluates students' understanding of the module content. It tests their ability to accurately solve problems, demonstrate technical proficiency, and apply theoretical knowledge under time constraints. Held overseas during the GXUST exam period.
Online Guided independent study 153.25 Guided independent study & completion of project report. Students will receive weekly guidance on what to study independently outside of class, including tutorial questions they are expected to complete in their own time. In addition, the students will have coursework to complete during this time period. The coursework provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills in calculation, thermofluids, energy system design, and report writing.

Centrally Time Tabled Examination 50 1~3~4~5 Exam Period HOURS= 2 hours 50 mins On campus Centrally Time Tabled Exam. Exam questions will consist of a mixture of analytical questions, where they must demonstrate how to apply a systems approach to a complex problem [M6] and select correct processes and recognize their limitations. Questions may also relate to practical laboratory experiences during the term. Examination held overseas during GXUST exam period
