Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
The objective is to develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of engineering design, including conceptual, embodiment and detail design stages, through a combination of lectures, tutorials, individual design exercises and group project work. (LO’s 1-4).

Embedding of employability/ PDP/ scholarship skills
Students will be able to analyse and design suitable components and systems for practical situations including engineering design codes and standards.

Assessment (formative and summative)
Formative feedback is provided through tutorial sessions and written feedback on coursework (LOs 1-4). Summative assessment is provided by the individual and group work, and a 2-hour exam (LOs 1-4).

Research/ teaching linkages
The teaching team’s industrial contacts along with scholarly activity in the subject area keep them up to date with the subject material and latest computer software.

Supporting equality and diversity
The style, pace of presentation and lecture notes are continually monitored and reviewed through feedback from students to ensure that they are suitable for all types of students, e.g. part-time, full-time, mature, overseas and those with special needs.

All lecture, tutorial and assessment materials are available as hard copies or in VLE to permit access to a diverse student group. Academic help and support is provided on a weekly basis in the timetabled classes.

The principles covered in this module apply to the field of engineering design anywhere in the world. All symbols, units, nomenclature and other parameters used in the teaching of this module are of international standards.

Description of module content:

Review of the design process and product design specifications, mechanical systems design, Functional Analysis and function structures, machine elements, engineering design codes and standards, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, Value Analysis, Design for Manufacture.

On completion of this module you will be able to:
LO1: analyse a set of requirements, produce appropriate design concepts to meet them, and make informed judgements on the adequacy of alternative proposals.
LO2: develop an efficient design embodiment for an engineering system. LO3: produce detail designs to appropriate standards.
LO4: appropriately select and apply a number of formal engineering design methods
