Module code: MEC09735
Module leader: Yuyang Zhou
School School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment
Subject area group: Engineering and Mathematics
Prerequisites

Requisites: AND Pre-requisite: System modelling, Control theory, Instrumentation AND Pre-requisite: [Module MEC08106] Control Measurement and Instrumentation

Description of module content:

In this module, you will learn about automated industrial control processes. You will learn about control, sensing and actuation. The study of sensors includes proximity sensors, limit switches, flow sensors and photosensitive sensors, among others. Also, you will explore various electrical machines, including DC and AC motors, and their key characteristics. The module covers basic control circuits, electro-pneumatic systems, and actuators like contactors and relays. You will dive into programmable logic controllers (PLCs), studying the IEC 61131-3 standard, including programming languages and design methods for different control types. Lastly, you will implement Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, focusing on tags, alarms, data trending, and HMI design for effective system control.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Understand design and implement pneumatic systems.

LO2: Analyse and specify sensor and actuator requirements.

LO3: Understand the operation and analyse the performance of electrical machines.

LO4: Analyse control system requirements, design and implement a programmable controller based control system.

LO5: Design and implement a Human Machine Interface for control systems.
