School School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment
Subject area group: Engineering and Mathematics
Prerequisites

Requisites: Pre-requisite: [Module MEC08118] Mechanics AND Pre-requisite: Mechanics & Engineering Design and CAD equivalent to SCQF level 9

Description of module content:

Revision of stress and strain in common engineering structuresTheory of finite elementsProcedure for creating finite element modelsChoice of element typeAxis symmetric modelsProblems of re-entrant cornersApplication of loads and constraintsSolution and presentation of results from finite element analysisInterpretation of stress and heat transfer results from finite element analysisValidation of finite element models

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Analyse structures, using finite element software to determine stress, deformation resulting from specified loading and constraints.

LO2: Validate the results of a finite element analysis by comparison with standard calculations.

LO3: Acknowledge finite element theory and software coding and assess their influence on the interpretation of results from a finite element analysis.

LO4: Weight up and interpret the significance of results from a finite element analysis in terms of structural integrity, design goals, liability and litigation.
