Requisites: AND Pre-requisite: [Module MEC09404] Materials and Manufacture 2 AND Pre-requisite: [Module MEC08400] Materials and Manufacture 1

Description of module content:

This module provides a comprehensive understanding of Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), focusing on the integration of design, planning, production, and management through computer-based systems. It explores production planning and control, manufacturing management strategies, and advanced manufacturing technologies such as automation, robotics, and flexible manufacturing systems. In addition, the module introduces key manufacturing management concepts, including production strategy, operations planning, resource allocation, quality management, lean manufacturing principles, and continuous improvement methodologies. It highlights the growing role of digital tools and technologies in modern manufacturing, such as Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM), and data analytics platforms, which support real-time monitoring, decision-making, and process optimization. Emphasis is placed on how these digital systems enable improved productivity, flexibility, and integration across manufacturing operations.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Analyse and design flexible manufacturing cells and systems.

LO2: Analyse and optimise layout and process design.

LO3: Design and analyse material handling for advanced manufacturing systems.

LO4: Develop production planning and control systems.
