Description of module content:

Combustion: processes, equipment and env ironmental impact. Boilers. Combined Heat & Power. Pumps: design, operation and performance. The module will introduce conventional as well as more modern, energy efficient practice. The three 'e's - economy, energy and env ironmental impact of energy generation and energy use technologies shall be addressed throughout.

Learning Outcomes for module:

On completion of this module you will be able to:
LO1: analyse combustion processes and their impact.
LO2: develop an advanced understanding of thermodynamics of advanced energy systems;
LO3: analyse the performance of sub-critical and super-critical boilers;
LO4: evaluate the reserves and impact of the use of limited fossil fuels;
LO5: analyse the performance of pumps.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
The approach adopted shall be of a participative nature with lectures and tutorials followed with
experimentation and case studies.
Embedding of employability/PDP/scholarship skills:
Guest lectures by industry and local government personnel shall be organised. Course work shall form the basis for: (i) PDP
and (ii) scholarship.

Formative Assessment:
The formative assessment will be an exercise on energy audit and Carbon foot print analysis of domestic
energy consumption. This will also include an feasibility of Carbon trading.

Summative Assessment:
A 2,500 word report
encompassing the above technical analysis shall be expected.
