Core Module Information
Module title: Control Engineering

SCQF level: 11:
SCQF credit value: 20.00
ECTS credit value: 10

Module code: MEC11101
Module leader: Simon Smith Bize
School School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment
Subject area group: Engineering and Mathematics
Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites for this module to be added

Description of module content:

In this module, you will learn to design, program and implement solutions for industry-level automation tasks using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) technology. You will learn the five programming languages described in the IEC61131-3 standard and program the Siemens S7-1500 PLC series in the practical laboratories. You will learn the software design method Sequential Function Charts to implement large-scale solutions. In the laboratory, you will program discreet and analogue sensors and actuators using closed- and open-loop control techniques for logic-based, sequential, and continuous control. The module includes cyclic and interrupt processing, fault diagnostic techniques, and sensor and measurement systems selection. You will learn to tune PID controllers using reaction curves and ultimate cycle methods. The module also includes the design and implementation of Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. You will learn and apply security standards to handle emergencies, conditions outside the working regime, user management and access to historical data.

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Design and implement a programmable controller based control system.

LO2: Specify types of sensors and measurement systems used for various control applications.

LO3: Develop and implement digital closed loop (PID) control and tune PID controllers to given processes.

LO4: Design and implement a distributed control system.
