Description of module content:

Normally 350 hours of nursing practice and practice reflection. Study days to integrate mental health nursing theory to practice
To introduce students to an area of nursing practice at an early stage of their career and to develop understanding and skills in relation to nurse/ client communication, development of fundamental nursing skills in infection prevention and control, nutrition and fluid management and medication management. Positive risk taking and a focus on maximising mental health will also be addressed.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Practice in accordance with the NMC (2008) Code of Professional Conduct to ensure the safety of clients and their carers and participate in measures to promote and ensure health and safety
LO2: Participate in a range of fundamental nursing care skills to meet the needs of individuals, under the supervision of a health care professional.
LO3: Demonstrate the identification of actual and potential risks to individuals, self and others and work collaboratively with partners to minimise risk
LO4: Demonstrate sensitivity in interactions with and provision of information to individuals
LO5: Identify and demonstrate the skills needed to enhance the health and well being of individuals
LO6: Develop an awareness of sociological and psychological theory in a mental health setting
