Description of module content:

In this module you will begin to develop your field specific identity through exploration of the historic and evolving role of the mental health nurse. You will build on your understanding of nursing professional values and how the distinct values of mental health nursing align to, and are underpinned by these; you will develop an understanding of how mental health nurses contribute to and support the provision of intra and inter professional health and social care. You will develop an understanding of models of nursing care and how the nursing process, and assessment and evaluation of care is structured and measured through evidence based approaches.
Learning Outcomes for module:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the role of contemporary mental health nursing

2. Articulate the values and philosophies of mental health nursing

3. Demonstrate knowledge of models of care and approaches to nursing practice as applicable to mental health nursing

4. Gain an appreciation of the nursing process and its application to evidence based mental health nursing

5. Develop an awareness of key social and political drivers that inform mental health nursing practice

Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
A blended approach will be utilised within this module which means that there wil be a combination of face to face and online learning opportunites. Lectures and tutorials will be used to deliver core concepts and ideas relating to development of understanding of the role of the mental health nurse (LO1-5).

Materials and activities will be provided via a virtual learning environment to supplement and compliment your learning within lectures and tutorials ( LO1-5). Lectures and tutorials will be recorded, enabling you to access these via your virtual learning environment to better support your development. Principles of inclusive learning wil be utilised within all teaching delivery to support all learners to achieve.

Scenario based approaches will enable application of nursing practice within a learning environment to enrich and deepen student understanding of mental health nursing practice (LO3&4).


Formative Assessment:
Find two pieces of peer reviewed literature that relates to the module content and which you find helpful and tell your peers about this, in small groups within class. Peers will give you feedback using a checklist.

Summative Assessment:
Write an annotated bibliography of 3 pieces of peer reviewed literature, including narrative text that links each piece to the module content - 1500 words
