Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach: |
This is a practice based module and the student will work under the direct supervision of a qualified mentor who will facilitate appropriate learning experiences and support the student to meet the module learning outcomes and to achieve the competencies (LO1-5). The student will work with a qualified mentor at least 40% of the time to develop their professional knowledge and skills in practice. The mentor will provide the student with guidance and feedback regarding progress towards and achievement of LOs 1-5 and the competencies. This will allow the student to reflect on their progress and the achievement of the learning outcomes. The learning outcomes of this practice module are informed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards for pre-registration nurse education and include practice competencies and essential skills clusters (NMC 2010) and are contained within the Scottish Ongoing Achievement Record. Normally, there will be 384 practice hours undertaken in this module.
Formative Assessment:The outcomes will be examined by mentor assessed competencies in practice. There will be discussion around learning outcomes and competencies to devise a learning development plan with the mentor in week 1 of the practice learning experience. The student will receive a formative interim review of their progress (usually around the midpoint of their practice learning experience) which will be undertaken by the mentor. This will optimise the student’s learning potential to achieve the appropriate competencies and learning outcomes by the end of this practice learning module.
Summative Assessment:A summative assessment will be undertaken by the mentor. This summative assessment will comprise of an assessment of achievement of the module learning outcomes, essential skill clusters and competencies within your Scottish Ongoing Achievement Record (LO1-5). Following the summative assessment there will be the opportunity to reflect on the achievement of the learning outcomes (LOs 1-5) in anticipation of the student’s next practice learning experience. Additionally, throughout the clinical placement the student will be expected to record personal and professional learning experiences in the electronic Personal Development Portfolio and use them to contribute to reflection sessions, thus enhancing the development of reflective skills.
