Description of module content:

The physicochemical characteristics of aquatic and terrestrial environments; factors affecting microbial survival & activity; role and importance of microorganisms; types of microorganisms; microbial study methods; microbial isolation methods; biogeochemical cycling; extreme environments; biodegradation and biotransformation mechanisms.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: Demonstrate an understanding of the physical and chemical structure of natural environments and how this affects the types and activities of microorganisms
LO2: Understand and critically appraise methods used in environmental microbiology
