Description of module content:

This module introduces you to midwifery practice with placements in a variety of maternity care settings.You will have practice supervisors, a practice assessor and an academic assessor in each area as per the Standards for Student Support and Assessment (NMC, 2018). The focus of the experience will be to enable you to develop the necessary skills required in caring for childbearing women, people and their families (LOs 1- 5). You will have the opportunity to perform basic clinical and interpersonal skills in maternity care settings (LOs 1, 2, 5). Initially your practice will be observational, with gradual progression to hands-on practice in accordance with your practice assessor's professional judgement of your level of experience, the clinical situation and the nature of the clinical skill. You will begin to record births and clinical examination of childbearing women, people and their babies as required by the European Midwifery Directives (2005) and the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC, 2019). You will also complete the Scottish Infection Prevention and Control Education Pathway (SIPCEP) foundation level of modules.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills.

LO2: Develop the ability to perform a range of practical midwifery skills including record keeping taking account of individual needs of women, birthing people and their families.

LO3: Gain an appreciation of professional and ethical dimensions in practice in accordance with The Code (NMC, 2018).

LO4: Participate in planning, assessing and evaluating midwifery care in a manner that minimises risk and promotes well-being.

LO5: Demonstrate the achievement of relevant Domain 6 Clinical Proficiencies (NMC, 2019).
