Description of module content:

In this module you will learn about five key areas:
The principles of evidence based midwifery practice:
You will build upon your existing knowledge of how to use evidence to inform practice. This includes learning about sources of midwifery knowledge and evidence; searching, sourcing and appraising evidence and research. The learning will be within the context of professional issues, and you will receive an introduction to midwifery research career pathways.
The research process:
You will develop an understanding of the stages of the research process. This will include the principles of qualitative and quantitative research; key research approaches and methods for midwifery research. You will also examine the underlying principles of research such as sampling, reliability and validity.
Research ethics and governance:
You will build your knowledge and understanding of ethics. In particular around the ethical principles for research, research governance and formal processes for research ethics.
UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative standards:
You will develop an understanding of and be able to evaluate and appraise the evidence base for infant nutrition and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) standards.
Writing a research proposal:
This module will include the principles of developing and writing a research proposal.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to
LO1: Explore approaches and methods commonly used in midwifery research, and the principles underpinning them.
LO.2 Accurately assess and interpret commonly presented, peer reviewed, midwifery evidence.
LO3: Critically reflect on the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative standards, their evidence base and how they impact midwifery practice.
LO4: Apply understanding of the principles of research for midwifery practice: utilising knowledge and skills gained throughout your learning.
