Description of module content:

This module introduces you to midwifery practice and actively encourages you to engage with and utilise your transferable skills as a registered nurse. The module represents the first of two parts of practice learning experience which enable you to meet the Future Midwife Proficiencies (NMC, 2019). For each part you will have practice supervisors, a practice assessor and an academic assessor who will plan and support your learning in each area as per the Standards for Student Support and Assessment (NMC, 2018). The focus of the experience will be to enable you to develop the necessary skills required in caring for childbearing women, birthing people and their families (LOs 1- 5). You will have the opportunity to develop clinical and interpersonal skills in maternity care settings (LOs 1, 2, 5). You will begin to record births and clinical examination of childbearing women and their babies as required by the European Midwifery Directives (2005) and the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC, 2019). You will also undertake mandatory skills and development as part of your clinical skills passport detailed in the MPAD. This module includes clinical skills such as assessment of maternal, fetal and neonatal wellbeing and medicines administration including SafeMedicate.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Critically reflect on existing communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrate effective application to midwifery practice.
LO2: Contextualise relevant nursing knowledge and skills and consider their significance in the performance of a range of practical midwifery skills including record keeping taking account of individual needs of the woman or birthing person and their family.
LO3: Explore professional and ethical concepts, identifying the role of the Code (NMC, 2018) and reflect on how these present within midwifery policy and practice
LO4: Justify the provision of midwifery care in a manner that optimises women and person’s capabilities and promotes wellbeing.
LO5: Demonstrate the required components of the Midwifery Practice Assessment Document (MPAD) for the end of Part 1, exercising initiative and developing autonomy as appropriate.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment (LTA) Approach:
The learning outcomes of this practice module are informed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council Standards for Proficiency for Midwives (NMC, 2019). You will be supported by your allocated practice supervisors and will be assessed by a practice assessor and an academic assessor (LO1-5). You will discuss your individual learning outcomes with your practice supervisors and/or practice assessor early in the placement and will receive an interim formative assessment and complete a final summative assessment (LO 1-5). Clinical skills such as maternal assessment will be introduced and taught in an integrated way drawing on practice based and online resources such as NHS Education Scotland’s online learning platform ‘TURAS’. You will be supported throughout the module via guided activities to critically reflect on both your progress and midwifery practice. This is supported by regular reflective tutorials with the module leader. You will also submit a critical reflection of 1000 words related to an agreed relevant proficiency in relation to your learning outcomes.
While the university has set NESH hours as per this descriptor, the NMC has a requirement that you will work a minimum number of hours per placement. In this case you will work an average of 40 hours per week in clinical practice.

Formative Assessment:
The formative assessment will include an initial orientation and an interim assessment and discussion which provides you with an opportunity to self-assess and gain feedback from your practice supervisors and/or practice assessor. You will complete an electronic Midwifery Practice Assessment Document (MPAD) which is an on-going record of learning and identifies how proficiencies are gained. This will also encompass reflective discussions with the module leader.

Summative Assessment:
Summative Assessment The summative assessment comprises of achievement of proficiencies. All clinical proficiencies identified in the electronic Midwifery Practice Assessment Document (MPAD) must be achieved (LOs 1-5). A 1000-word critical reflection on practice will be submitted before the end of Part 1.
